GROWING IN TO LIFE
Limingan Koulutuskeskus (Liminka Residential School) is a
child care centre operating under the THL (National Institute for Health
and Welfare). Established in 1829 near Viipure, under teh name
Uudenkartanon (Nygårdin) kasvatuslaitos (Uusikartano [Nygård] youth and
reforma school), we are the oldest child substitute care center in
Finland and among the oldesti in the Nordic countries . From 1869 the
school was known as Kylliälän kasvatuslaitos (Kylliälä reform
institution) until it was transferred to its present location in 1945
and renamed Kylliälän koulukoti (Kylliälä School Home). We have been
operating under the present name since 1993.
Our mission is to provide open, substitute and after-care under the
Child Welfare Act, including comprehensive school education,
vocational education and related support services. We are also capable
of providing mental health care services under the Mental Health Act,
excluding involuntary psychiatric treatment.
We provide holistic rehabilitation, upbringing, education and care
services for highly challenging children and young people who have
problems, or both, and have often missed school and commited offences.
We co-operate closely with parents, close relatives and municipalities.
We also have services for young people.
Children and adolescents placed with us are living in some of our
intensive care units, small-scale units or in a special-care unit.
Family-type upbringing is provided by our two foster homes. The
youngsters can practice independent living skills on our premises or
outside the centre. Comprehensive school education is provided by our
own special school. It is also possible in our centre to learn a trade
at special-needs institution offering vocational education, arranged by
Ammattiopisto Luovi (Luovi Vocational Institute). The existing Secondary
education system of the neighbouring community can also be utilised. We
offer o wide and versatile rang of leisure activities.
